This is very much a mini gluten free Salzburg guide as we were only in the city for a day trip. Nevertheless, we came across a few gluten free eateries while we were there and I wanted to share my tips with you all. Hopefully they will make for a good starting point for your Austria trip and reassure you about Salzburg’s gluten free credentials!
Gluten Free Salzburg
Mozart Cafe
Whenever we visit a city, I always have to track down gluten free cake. In Salzburg, I found my gluten free cake at Café Mozart in the town centre. They had two varieties of gluten free cake available (each packaged with plastic film on the sides to avoid cross contamination) and my cravings were quickly satisfied. We had a delicious mango cheesecake with with a gluten free cakey base. Yum!
The Heart of Joy Café
I had read about this vegetarian café before our visit and we trekked through a very snowy Salzburg to get there. We were rewarded with plenty of gluten free options (and some vegan ones too, for those of you that way inclined). After the cold, snowy walk, I had a nice warming lunch of gluten free curried red lentil soup with a gluten free mozzarella, pesto and tomato sandwich on the side. They also have gluten free cakes available. A lovely spot to try out.
Sternbräu
Authentic Austrian cuisine with a gluten free menu available and plenty of coeliac-friendly choices. They are also able to cater for lactose free guests.
Pizza & Pasta – Spaghetti Co
We didn’t have time to try this place for ourselves but I have seen lots of reviews recommending its gluten free food. Reviewers state it is suitable for coeliacs.
DM Drogerie Market in the town centre
This supermarket/drug store might not seem promising when you first walk in and are confronted with shampoo bottles, but they have a huge range of gluten free products here. Walk past the shelves of toiletries when you go in until you reach the big food section. This chain is always a reliable source of Schar and other gluten free products in Austria.
